Tuesday 10th of January 2023

The Emirati low-budget carrier airline, flydubai has announced the postponement of direct flights to Addu at Gan International Airport (GIA). The flight operations were previously scheduled to start on the upcoming February however, were delayed to the second quarter of 2023 to allow more marketing time. The new date set to commence operations is June 24th of 2023.

The postponement of operations will give tour operators and industry partners more time to market tourism in the destination, especially in the South of Maldives. It will provide a sufficient window for promoting the tourism prospects in Southern Maldives to potential travel trade by participating in exhibitions planned for the year.

As for passengers who have already made their booking with flydubai, the airline offers compensation in several alternatives. Those who have purchased the tickets can conveniently change the dates without no further additional cost to a later date, For passengers who wish to travel in the previous window, the airline is providing tickets to Dubai via Velana International Airport (VIA) with 2 nights accommodation and complimentary domestic transfers arranged for them.

Flydubai has now begun selling tickets for flights starting on June 24th. The airline already operates scheduled direct flights between VIA and Dubai International Airport and with the service extension would broaden its connectivity to the Maldives by including GIA. This would result in a weekly frequency of 28 flights to the market for flydubai, a steppingstone compared to when the flight initially commenced operations in 2013.
