Six Senses Laamu's SHELL Marks One-Year Milestone in Marine Conservation

Monday 25th of March 2024

Six Senses Laamu proudly commemorates the one-year anniversary of its Sea Hub of Environmental Learning in Laamu (SHELL), reaffirming its commitment to marine conservation and environmental education. Since its inauguration in March 2023, the SHELL has emerged as a beacon of sustainable practices, fostering awareness and collaboration for the protection of marine ecosystems in the Maldives.

The SHELL, nestled on the sunset beach of Six Senses Laamu, spans over 2,336 square feet, serving as an immersive exhibition space for guests, hosts, and local residents alike. Operated by the Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI), in collaboration with marine biologists from Six Senses Laamu and partnering NGOs, including Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation, and Olive Ridley Project, the SHELL hosts a working marine laboratory at its core.

Research conducted at the SHELL has yielded remarkable results, including coral larval restoration efforts and sea turtle DNA analysis. Over 10,000 baby corals from diverse species are nurtured within the SHELL, contributing to the rehabilitation of the resort's house reef. Additionally, ongoing projects, such as turtle genetics research, enhance understanding of Maldivian sea turtle populations.

Community engagement remains integral to the SHELL's mission, with over 300 local residents and 237 students participating in educational programs over the past year. Notable visitors, including naturalist Steve Backshall, have lauded the SHELL for its groundbreaking initiatives in marine conservation.

Recognizing its groundbreaking efforts, the SHELL was honored with the Aspire Sustainability Initiative of the Year Award in 2023, underscoring Six Senses Laamu's commitment to environmental stewardship. Lawrence Menz, Director of Sustainability and Conservation at Six Senses Laamu, expressed pride in the SHELL's achievements, emphasizing its role in inspiring future generations of conservationists.

Marteyne van Well, General Manager of Six Senses Laamu, hailed the SHELL as a testament to the resort's dedication to environmental protection. Recently recognized in Forbes magazine for her contributions to ocean conservation, van Well emphasized the SHELL's role in shaping a sustainable future for the Maldives.

As Six Senses Laamu celebrates the SHELL's first anniversary, it looks ahead with optimism, continuing to lead the charge in marine conservation and community engagement in the Maldives.
