Le Méridien Maldives Inspires Young Ocean Guardians

Thursday 11th of September 2025

The beauty and significance of the ocean were the most prominent one as students of Ohluvelifushi School last week experienced a highly inspiring day of marine education organized by Le Merdidien Maldives Resort and Spa, Sub Oceanic Maldives and Scuba Schools International (SSI). The project was supposed to trigger interest and make young students feel that they are going to be the sea guardians in the future.

The occasion came after SSI visited Le Méridien Maldives recently to shoot its latest training videos at the colorful house reef in this resort. It is on this partnership that the teams went out of the reef and worked with the local community using an educational program that enabled them to relate children to the marvels of the ocean world.

Cesar Briliandi, Marine Biologist, Le Méridien Maldives and Sub Oceanic Maldives, presented an energetic presentation on the sea turtles, making the students learn to differentiate between hawksbill and green turtles, know their habitats and the reason why both species were endangered. The children also examined the importance of seagrass in the survival of turtles and the well-being of the ocean in general.

The lessons were enhanced in an interactive way using games, quizzes, and a meet-and-greet with the visiting teams; this inspired the students who were left wanting to learn more. The visit inspired our students a lot. Questions were posed, they have learned first-hand with the experts and this day they view the ocean as an extension of their own future, said Mr. Ibrahim, Principal of Ohluvelifushi School.

In the future, the students will explore Le Mersidien, which has an amazing house reef and a Marine Conservation Hub, on a guided tour provided by SSI partner Mares who will provide snorkeling equipment. The resort in collaboration with Sub Oceanic Maldives intends to extend the program and introduce more workshops and diving courses which makes the Maldives the next generation of ocean ambassadors.
