Monday 19th of June 2023

The Ministry of Tourism of the Maldives has unveiled the Maldives tourism updates, which show that a total of 861,167 tourists have arrived in the Maldives as of 14th June 2023. Compared to the same period last year, this is a 14.2% increment in the growth rate, a welcome and promising change to the reviving industry post-pandemic.

Despite the currently ongoing off-season, arrival numbers have not significantly fallen, denoting the allure and fascination of the Maldives with the global travel community. Taking a closer look at the statistics reveals that on average, visitors spent a week in the Maldives, with most of them opting to stay at resorts, followed by guesthouses.

As of now, 170 resorts are in operation in the Maldives while 901 guesthouses, 160 safari vessels and 13 hotels are also operating in various parts of the country. The majority of guesthouses are concentrated in Zone 3 and Zone 2 of the Maldives. Zone 3 encompasses Kaafu Atoll, Ari Atoll and Vaavu Atoll while Zone 2 comprises Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani Atolls.

The top 10 source markets for the Maldives have considerably shifted compared to earlier in the year. The Russian market which continued to top the charts in the earlier months has been replaced by the Indian market, the no.1 market of 2022. The Russian market now resides in 2nd position with a narrow margin of market share percentage shared with the Indian market. Other European markets including the UK, Germany and Italy take up the 3rd,4th and 5th spot respectively while the French and Swiss markets are also featured on the list.

China has swiftly made a comeback into the top 10 list following the opening of international borders while a newly emerging market, South Korea has also found a spot among the top 10. The Maldives is expected to reach the 1 million milestone mark in tourist arrivals real soon, earlier than last year’s date and this year’s predicted projections. At the moment, the Maldives is also the World’s Leading Destination – a title the country has held for three consecutive years.
