Future of Education in the Maldives

The COVID19 pandemic had caused the government to temporarily close all educational institutions as a precautionary measure. However, after the first case of local transmission is identified and the situation continues to deteriorate in the island nation, when these institutions will open has become a huge worry.

After the closure of schools, with all state offices, government had commenced online classes to help students cope with the curriculum, especially for grade 10 students who were supposed to do their O levels this year. Universities and colleges conducted classes through Skype and Google Hangout. Nevertheless, with the implementation of lockdown in the Greater Male’ area, there has been a halt in most online and Tele-classes as well.

This sorrowful incident has affected students such that they will not be able to receive their education as planned. Some college students are still paying their college fees to private institutions for online classes, which has been a big concern since these are times of financial difficulties and students find it hard to focus on online classes. How long this will go on is uncertain, but it sure that it will cause delay in the education of the country.
