50 years ago, the UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme was launched with a vision to connect the greatest beings in the ecosystem with its roots – man with nature. Over the years, an amazing network of designated Biosphere Reserves were selected from around the world, that became living laboratories that boost nature-based solutions for sustainable development.
To commemorate half a century of successful operation, the World Network of Biosphere Reserves will unite together to throw light on life at the programmes. One of the activities held will be a virtual exhibition by UNESCO showcasing 12 of the most popular and active Reserves from the 714 in 129 countries. Grabbing a spot on this list is Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve in the Maldives.
A gold-pit of diversity, a location where enigmatic marine life come together to display an array of unique events, the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve has, for the past 10 years, brought together thousands of guests to witness magic beneath the waves. Managed by the Biosphere Reserve office in Baa Atoll, they are more than delighted to have earned world-class recognition for the Maldives.
The team is busy preparing visual content to display in the virtual exhibition that will showcase everyday life and the growth of the reserve to a global audience. According to the Reserve’s Outreach Officer, Shafy Ali, this is an opportunity to bring immense exposure to the sustainable tourism efforts in the ever-so-dreamy Maldives at a time when the trends are shifting towards more meaningful experiences.
